Considerations When Selecting Diet Foods

Author : Peter Gitundu

Diet foods and what to know about them should be learned about whenever the time has come to engage in a quality diet program that has as its aim the improvement of health and fitness through changes in dietary habits and lifestyle. It's a fact that many foods that are supposedly meant for a diet really aren't. A box labeled "no fat" doesn't mean that it has no calories in the food, after all.

In reality, just about any food that doesn't get a third or more of its calories from saturated fat or any kind of fat can work as a food suitable for a diet. Additionally, foods that have correct proportions of carbohydrates, protein and good fat (i. E. Unsaturated fat) can work well for a diet. These foods are usually low in calorie content and high in health potential.

The first thing that needs to be done when it comes to selecting the right kinds of foods to go into a diet that has as its aim the reduction of weight and the improvement of fitness is to consider just what foods should make up a healthy diet itself. Most dietitians and other health experts say that the best diets are those that are high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

This is also to say that some amount of good quality protein from sources such as lean meat or chicken or sources recommended by vegetarianism experts will need to be included because most vegetables and fruits do not have much protein contained within, though they will certainly have plenty of carbohydrates. Again, the key will be in maintaining proper amounts of each food group.

This is also why it can be a good thing to learn how to take a food or a food box or container in a supermarket and know how to break down the contents label to determine the calories contained in a serving and also where those calories come from. For example, any food that has 30% or more of its calories from saturated fat should be avoided. And, a high calorie/no fat food might not be any better.

Outside of most fruits and vegetables -- which any weight loss program or organization will tell you can be eaten in almost any amount -- one should take care to count the calories of most self-proclaimed diet foods. This is because even a food that is actually appropriate for a diet can, if eaten into large an amount, actually cause a person to gain weight and not lose it.

When taken all together, it's good to remember that the right diet will have the right proportions of the right foods and will stay below certain maximum calorie levels. Try to make sure at least a small amount of protein is included in the diet and it comes from a good source and that calorie counting is being done on a consistent basis in order to avoid taking in too many calories, regardless of the source.
