The Process Of Preparing Toughened Glass And Usages

Author : Paul Johson

Special heat treatment and temperature differential offer toughened glass more strength compared to normal glass. They are commonly used in transport, building and construction industries.

Buildings require large span of glass. For this purpose, toughened glass is the widely accepted alternative. Compared to normal glass they have a greater level of strength. The strength enhancement comes from the stress profile that is induced while manufacturing toughened glass. In this glass, you can find compression in surface and tension in centre. Compression in the surface enhances the stress bearing capacity of the glass for tensile loads. Tension at center ensures equal sharing of stress throughout the surface and greater resistance.

Process of preparing toughened glass

Heat treatment process is practiced while preparing toughened glass. In this process, the liquid glass is annealed between transition temperature and softening point. After it, the liquid glass undergoes through a process of instant cooling using air jets. As a result of this process the surface of liquid glass freezes but interior remains still in the molten stage. After it, temperature differential method is applied across the thickness of glass pulp. As result, molten core of the pulp contracts at a faster rate compared to surface. The whole process adds to strength, stress bearing capacity and performance of glass.

Key properties of Toughened glass and their application

As told above this glass has superior strength compared to normal glass. They have the capacity of falling into small pieces when there is a failure. This property adds to the safety standards of toughened glass. They have good chemical resistance and can survive the attack of hydrofluoric acid. For the above properties they are used in transport, building and construction industries in a large scale.
