The Serious Business Of Sport-Climbing

Author : Sean Teahan

Since the 1900s, the mightiest mountains of the world were scaled and conquered one at a time. The first was Trisul at 23,364 feet, one of the Himalayan peaks. In 1953, the 29,000-foot Mount Everest was conquered by the New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Norkay. Because of postwar mountaineering developments, 15 of the world’s 17 highest peaks were reached in a span of ten years, from 1950 to 1960.

Nowadays, most people satisfy their desire to conquer heights and feel the challenge surging through their muscles just by going to a gym. But this is not your average gym, with the ubiquitous treadmills and weights. This is the gym geared for mountain climbers or rock climbers—with a challenging rock wall and harnesses scattered about. These are for people who want to try extreme sports but in a gradual and systematic way.

For an annual membership fee that an average employee could cover with an instant payday loan, people could let go of their wall-crawling energies. They could try the easy maneuvers and the easy areas of the formidable rock wall. As they grow confident of their climbing skills, they could tryout the more challenging sections of the rock wall. With specialized gyms such as sports-climbing facilities, athletes and amateurs alike do not need to let their summer climbing conditioning go to waste come rainy periods. They just have to sign up for membership to avail and enjoy the use of these facilities.

For those who want to enjoy as well as profit from sports climbing, it is not too hard to set up a specialized gym for climbing enthusiasts. Yes, the sports climbing business is very capital intensive to put up, but once it is up and running, the operational costs are easy to control. Here are a few tips for those who want to set up a sport-climbing wall for business.

First, it’s not enough to know how to handle the business side of running things. Business owners must also know the technical aspects of sport-climbing. It’s like being a business person and a climbing coach at the same time. More often than not, people who want to tryout the sport need a little coaching on the do’s and don’ts of the sport. Next, as with any kind of business, location is important. Lastly and more importantly, the gym should not be the only source of income for the would-be business owners. They should make sure it offers extra amenities that could make profit, such as selling climbing gear and equipment. Rock climbing would shell out their payday loans to purchase the necessary high quality equipment.
