Gir National Park, established in 1965, lies in western Gujarat. As National Parks go, Gir practically sells itself: it serves as a reserve forest for preserving the Asiatic lion. Today, the ecology of Gir, is an outcome of the efforts made by the Government forest department, wildlife activists, and NGOs. The forest is mostly arid, deciduous teak littered with thorny shrubs. Though systematic conversation efforts were initiated later, the forest area of Gir and its lions were declared as in the 1900s, by the erstwhile Nawab of Junagadh.
