Designing Trade Show Displays 101

Author : Steve Booth (the trade show display guy)

You may need a college degree to design fancy trade show displays, or at least be a professional graphic designer, but you don't need a degree or credential to design effective trade show displays... and having an effective design is what make a trade show display a success. Smart exhibitors know the important thing is not to worry if your trade show display is FANCY, the key is to worry about whether or not it is EFFECTIVE.

And fortunately, creating effective graphic designs for trade show displays does not require an fancy degree, no matter what the "experts" may claim. All you really need to do is use common sense. Unfortunately, judging by the surprising lack of effective trade show displays at many shows, it seems that common sense may not be all that common. From my experience, many exhibitors just don't use their heads when they create their trade show design. But if you read this article and follow these fundamental design elements, you can design an attention-getting, compelling, and effective trade show display that will entice potential prospects into your booth, where you can then convert them into customers (which is what trade show marketing is all about). If you create a design that does the following three things, it will do its job and be effective.

First, you've got to get their attention. Think of your trade show booth as a needle in a haystack. So job number one is to have a attention-grabbing booth design. If you don't get their attention, people will just keep going to see the next "interesting" booth. A big, bold, "in your face" background picture will almost always take care of this first step.

Second, your trade show display design should make clear who you are and also what it is that you do. Make sure your company name is at the top and is easy to find. Also in easy to understand terms, you must clearly state what your company does. People passing by should be able to glance at your display and immediately know what your company name is and what you do.

Third, you need to explain WWIFM (what's in it for me, "me" being your potential customer). This is a critical part of having an effective design. People want to know how you can help them - that's why they'll stop and talk to you. As an example, if you a travel company, you might say how many different locations you service. Just remember, to be effective, your design must explain how you can help.

In the end, trade show display design 101 means this. Designing effective trade show displays means creating a design that does the three things above. You need a trade show display design that stands out. Your booth design should have your company name at the top and what your company does. And lastly, your design must say how you can help people. You can easily improve your trade show marketing efforts by just creating a trade show display design that does these three simple things. And that is trade show display design 101!
