Avoiding Kitchen Renovation Disasters

Author : Nomi Kato

When it comes to most of our homes, it is widely considered that the kitchen is the heart and hearth of the home. For most people, the first thing they remember is the smell of dinner cooking, the feel of dough between their fingers, or other happy kitchen times.

It goes without saying that we all want our kitchens to inspire happy memories in those around us, particularly the younger ones whose first memories are being formed. Should you consider a redesign or renovation of your kitchen, there are a few things that you should keep in mind to ensure that the end result is something everyone can enjoy.

The first thing you want to consider are your appliances. These are, of course, the tools that you will need to get your work done. From the stove to the refrigerator, each of them performs a vital function that most kitchens would be absolutely paralyzed without. For most basic purposes, you will need an oven with a stovetop, a combination refrigerator freezer, and for most of our busy, no-time-to-cook-real-food lives, a microwave or toaster oven.

The next thing to consider is the overall appearance of the kitchen, the aesthetics. From the tile to the wallpaper to the color of the appliances, each component in your kitchen should accentuate the whole and work in harmony to produce the best effect. Even the way the room is lit can have a significant impact. Though the appearance is important, there is one factor that is even more so.

When you are designing a kitchen, the main question that you are going to need to keep in your mind at all times is, "Can I work effectively in this room?" Many times in the past, people have designed absolutely beautiful kitchens, only to find that they are so terrible to actually work in that they end up cooking even less than before they started. While the look of the room is definitely an important factor, the simple fact is that if you can't work there, you're probably not going to.

What about storage? Every kitchen needs a certain amount of storage, to ensure that you have not only all your spices where you need them, but your canned goods and pastas and meats and vegetables, not to mention all the tools you will need to use to cook said ingredients. Make sure that you have plenty of storage space and everything will go smoother as time goes on.

There is no way to underestimate the value of planning ahead when you are going to remodel your kitchen. Most of the thousands of little disasters that can befall a project can be easily avoided if the time is taken ahead of time to address them and ensure that they don't happen. When everything goes to plan, not only will you be left with the kitchen of your dreams, but a pleasant journey getting there.
