Insomnia and Treatments
Millions of people suffer from insomnia. 'Why' is a very good question. There are almost as many causes as there are sufferers. The secret is to trace the cause and attack that. But this article discusses a number of treatments for insomnia. If the condition is serious, you should consult your family doctor and sooner rather than later.
One major mistake some insomniacs make is to remove their sleeplessness with alcohol. This is completely the wrong approach. Indeed alcohol does make you drowsy but it does nothing to remove the root cause of your insomnia. In addition, alcohol is addictive and you could be creating an additional problem for your health.
There are approved medications for insomnia. Only a doctor can approve such treatments. You will need to explain fully the nature of your insomnia. Some people take ages to actually get to sleep while others fall asleep quickly only to wake up several times during the night. There are different drugs for different conditions. They all aim to help the patient enjoy a good night's sleep but make sure you are prescribed the appropriate medication.
Behavior changes. Sometimes a person suffers from insomnia because of their behavior – something they do or don't do. The key is to find out which behavior is the culprit and then change that behavior. It might be your diet which is too rich that causes you difficulty in sleeping. It might be stress from poor light in reading or performing your job. Find the cause, change the behavior and hopefully remove your insomnia.
Home remedies. Many people swear by a drink or exercise or even a special pillow as being the best way to give them a good night's sleep. These so-called home remedies have little if any scientific backing but don't try telling that to the people who have no insomnia as they sip their chamomile tea just before retiring. You'll find a list of these home remedies online and you can even invent your own. Don't knock it till you've tried it.
Over the counter medications. There are some drugs such as antihistamines which you can buy without a prescription. They are commonly used by people who suffer allergies. The drug can make a person drowsy and if falling asleep is a problem, this might be a possible solution.
Holistic Kinesiology. This relatively new modality has been shown to get great results in the treatment of Insomnia. Holistic Kinesiology identifies the root cause and employs a variety of treatment methods to remove the problem. It often involves the rebalancing of the body's inbuilt clock using Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques.
Insomnia is common and it can be only a minor irritant to most sufferers. But it also can persist and chronic insomnia is a serious health issue. As the slogan almost says, "If insomnia persists, see your doctor".
