The young of today have taken to a modified form of skating in a big way. In an era where indoor computer games rule the hearts and minds of the kids, roller skating is an outdoor sport that is both exciting and fashionable to be part of.
The only requirements to be part of this adventurous sport are a keen interest and skates to ride on. The skates in this form of skating are basically of two main types- quads or inline.
History of the Game
Roller skates first came into picture in a London stage show way back in the eighteenth century. patented versions of inline and quad skates came to be in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, but it was not until the 1877 when the combined efforts of William Brown and Joseph Henry Hughes when the skates closest to those seen today were born.
By 1880s, these skates were being sold commercially in America and a sport was born. Rollerblade Inc. became synonymous with roller skating industry. In fact the term rollerblading is now generic terms for any form of skating, and is derived from the company's name.
Types of Roller Skating
The main forms of this type of skating are
1 figure skating, and as a dance form (freestyle or synchronized). Figure skating as a competition involves skating in a round or oval rink, and contestants are judged on their moves, grace, control over movements and balance. The dance skating versions are judged more on the choreography and execution of the steps.
2 Roller Hockey- this is an old sport that is played on quad skates and is extremely popular the world over. It is a game that moves at a rapid pace and is quite thrilling to watch.
3 Inline Skating- this form of skating is the more casual kinds that one sees youngsters do on the roads, sidewalks and stairs. The skates used in this form, i.e. inline, generally contain 3, 4 or 5 wheels all lined in a single file.
4 Roller Derby- this is gaining popularity over the years and is quite popular with ladies.

5 Freestyle- the Slalom skating is the most popular in this field and is of two types- freestyle slalom and speed slalom. Both involve manoeuvres through a line of placed cones.
Roller skating finds many takers even among adults. It is a good and fun way to fitness. Some people also find skating a fast and environment friendly transport alternative. Thus, this form of skating is the perfect combination of fun and sport, and has many addicted to it worldwide
