Set Up IRS Payment Plans Before They Take Your Wages

Author : Groshan Fabiola

There are few pieces of mail more serious than a notice of IRS levy. Bank account and paycheck garnishments are well within the jurisdiction of the Internal Revenue Service once a taxpayer has ignored several notices regarding the debt that they owe, plus interest and fees. Almost nothing is off limits with an IRS levy: wages, checking accounts, banking accounts and even personal property can be taken over for the purpose of paying back what you owe. There are IRS payment plans and many other arrangements to help retire your debt, but you must act fast once things have gotten to this serious state.

Taxpayers who wish to set up IRS payment plans or other types of arrangements must play by the rules. It is necessary to disclose all assets including cash, bank accounts, investments and others. Honesty is the only way to avoid an IRS levy. Bank account information must also be disclosed to the Internal Revenue Service, including details of all checking accounts, savings accounts, money market accounts and/or brokerage accounts. And they will check to see whether you are in a position to borrow money or even draw from a retirement account to satisfy the debt. Full disclosure is the only way to move forward with negotiations.

If you do not set up any sort of IRS payment plans, offers in compromise or penalty abatements, then it is inevitable that you will be plagued with an IRS levy. Wages are garnished based on a specific calculation of the difference between your income and your expenses. If you do not make any attempt to contact them, they will determine monthly expenses based on a hypothetical situation.

There are many ways to get tax relief if you owe a great deal of money, but if you sit back and do nothing there is no doubt that the IRS will eventually garnish your wages and/or levy your bank accounts. You must act fast to avoid this.
