The primary job responsibility of a general manager includes directing and coordinating the operations of a small business or a department within an organization. While in small sized companies there would be only a single general manger for all the departments like sales, Purchase, personnel and other departments while in large companies each department would be under the supervision of a general manager. Typically reporting to the CEO of the company, general managers enjoy a high profile job and status apart from a lucrative pay pack.

General Managers should analyze the functioning and objectives of each department and make corrective decisions if needed. They must have a perfect critical thinking ability and leader ship qualities to motivate and encourage the support staff to put in their best. General Managers also play a key role in formulating the rules and regulations of the company and to devise strategies inorder to achieve the goals of the organization. An ideal General Manager should have excellent interpersonal skills and administrative capabilities. He /she would be in charge of the training and induction programs for the employees to optimize their productivity. A General manger would be required to handle confidential files and sensitive data of the company and should maintain the utmost integrity and professionalism while dealing with such vital information.

Typically, lower level managers are promoted to the general manager position depending on their caliber and experience. Nonetheless in some cases, outside recruitment also would be done. A management degree with good marks from any reputed university would be desirable. According to the areas of specialization, the candidates would be posted in the various departments including Human resources, marketing and finance among others. General Managers work schedule would be tedious and demanding and to be successful in this hot seat, one should be mentally and physically strong and should be willing to put in that extra effort that would make all the difference in the world to the company's prospects and future.
