There are many important factors that go into the proper usage of any custom router bits, starting with choosing the right bit for the job. If you are routing wood you cannot use plastic routers bits, and if you are routing plastic you cannot use wood router bits. There is much more that goes into the proper use of any sort of custom router bits though, such as the right way to adjust the bits once they are securely inserted onto the cutting machine.
Different routing projects will require different cutting depths, and with proper adjustment the precise depth is easy to achieve. As long as your plastic routers bits or wood router bits are securely inserted to avoid flying off in mid-cut, which could be extremely dangerous, you are ready to go. Adjusting the router bits starts by placing the router on a flat surface. Then simply loosen the locking nut and turn the collar until the bit just barely touches the work surface that you are doing your project on.
To make the final adjustments, you will want to slide your custom router bits to the edge of the work surface until they are just past it. Then turn the collar until the bits are at the desired depth and lock the collar in place. Now all you need to do is tighten the locking nut to be sure it will remain securely in place so it will never fly off.
Just by properly adjusting your wood router bits or plastic routers bits you can easily improve the success of all your routing jobs. The same will apply whether you are working with wood, plastic, metal or any type of composite material. The cutting depth decides the outcome of any routing job so this is a necessary skill to have for all serious craftsmen or workers in modern machining shops.
