A Look Into LED Technology Development

Author : Mathew Petrenko

How were LED lights invented? In fact it was not more than an occasion. Works with the semiconductor Silicon Carbide (SiC) showed that supplied with electricity it could produce light. That was in the first years of the 20th century. But the discovery was not developed as the light emitted by Silicon Carbide was not strong enough to serve for something. That was anyway not the end of the technology development.

20 years were left aside and the project of LED production was supported by specialists from Germany and Russia once more. Still the light didn’t happen to appear better and the research was not too successful. The interest in led light application was rekindled in 1936 when the article on electroluminescence was published. The scientists still didn’t truly move forward. At last the development turned better in 1950s when the new researches were made by some English scientists. So infrared light-emitting diode was invented. And that all was followed by the creation of the 1st visible spectrum LED, that shined red and was created with Gallium Phosphide (GaP).

Since that time the quick progress of light-emitting diode technology went on. Some discoveries in the sphere were made very often. Different substrates were applied to produce any LED colors. Orange and pale green were invented a bit later than red, then appeared yellow and bright green. Blue light-emitting diodes were let out by 1990s with the entrance of Gallium Nitride into the composition. And thanks to those blue lights it appeared possible to create white leds, that was managed with the use of fluorescent phosphors. Any tint of those lights is possible today.

As a result more methods to use light-emitting diodes were found. The light output of light-emitting diodes was really small so they could be used just in monitor illumination and some indicators. Being expensive the LEDs were used in research centers conditions just in different test devices. Just in some time people started to apply light-emitting diodes in watches, cameras and more things. Production of monitors was the other field for LEDs to be used in for many colors were then available. Digital technologies made new achievements with the application of LEDs.

Later in 1997 James P. Mitchell invented the 1st light-emitting diode flat panel television which had monochromatic display with the only color red. The following step of the development was in nineties as blue light-emitting diodes were created. Their cost became reasonable and they were actively applied. And the end of 90-es is known for the beginning of flat panel light-emitting diode TV set production because just then all the existing color tints were possible to model.

As the light of a LED turned better people began to apply the technology more and more. Not only indicators, now LEDs were applied in different gadgets made just for emitting light. Lights on the streets, small torches, traffic lights… light-emitting diodes were everywhere. Lots of people bought LED lights like led lighting or any other stuff to give light in their houses and in their autos, in any place, in all aspects of life. No wonder, the technology promised to be cheap and really handy.

Still all that evolution demanded quite much time. A strange discovery turned into the stuff we can hardly imagine our living without today. And if we just imagine how hopeless the invention seemed to its first researchers! They thought the work was to bring no result. Still the technology was worked on and truly successfully. We can see it today.
