Bonding Technique In Cosmetic Dentistry

Author : Alice Campbell

It is often seen that teeth become discolored or decay or chip over a period of time. The stains may appear because of smoking, drinking tea, coffee, or red wine. You may develop cavity or part of a tooth may simply chip. These problems leave our teeth discolored and weak. A special branch of dentistry called cosmetic dentistry takes care of the looks of the teeth. Some of the popular treatments carried out in cosmetic dentistry are tooth bleaching, enamel shaping, veneering, and tooth bonding.

Bonding of teeth is an excellent technique for rectifying teeth defects like gaps between the teeth, spots developed from smoking or otherwise, and repairing chipped tooth. This procedure has to be specifically done in a cosmetic dentist clinic. The risk involving the bonding is nil.

In cosmetic dentistry before the bonding is done the tooth is prepared by the cosmetic dentist for the procedure. The tooth which is to be bonded is made a little rough so that the composite sticks to the surface. A bonding agent is applied to the teeth before the composite is applied. The composite is made from acrylic resin. They are in paste form so that they can be molded to the shape of the tooth. These are also made to match the pigmentation of your tooth as well as translucency.

The resin is given some time to harden. After this, the dentist polishes it. Now the tooth looks absolutely fine and in perfect shape. A lamplight is applied to still harden the material. The tooth is made strong so that it does not break from biting or chewing. Bonding can be used for filling small gaps and repairing chipped or broken tooth. A chunk of the composite resin filling can be used to fill the gaps and shaped to fit your original tooth. The overall procedure for the bonding however remains the same.

Cosmetic dentistry makes teeth bonding a simple affair. Instead of having metal fillings, which do not look attractive, bonding repairs the teeth in a way that looks natural. Cosmetic dentistry makes it possible for you to get that beautiful smile in spite of all the problems you may have in your denture.

To keep the bonding look perfect you have to take care of it. It has been seen that while on some people it remains as good as new after several years, some spoil the effect within a year or so. You have to keep your teeth clean by brushing and flossing regularly. Avoid sweets and chocolate in between meals as they harm your teeth. Harsh toothpaste and hard toothbrush will harm the bonding too. Biting into hard things like carrot or radish with your front teeth will damage the bonding done on it. Nail biting can also harm bonding. Any kind of discomfort to the bonded tooth like feeling of roughness should be reported to the dentist immediately. The important thing is to select your dentist carefully. With a little touch ups on your bonding he or she can make it last for a very long time.
