Whether you plan to hire a car, or are visiting the country in your own vehicle, make sure you have all your travel and car insurance documents with you at all times. It’s a good idea to have breakdown insurance in case something should happen to the car, and also to spare you the hassle, stress and financial burden of having to be rescued in Spain.
A good drive, which should be taken over at least two days for maximum enjoyment, is between Barcelona and Valencia. Take rest stops in the cities of Tarragona and Castellon de la Plana, as well as smaller villages and towns along the way.
From Barcelona, drive south to Tarragona, which showcases several well preserved Roman ruins, said to be the best on the Iberian Peninsula, as well as a wealth of beautiful attractions, splendid ocean views and some of the best places to savour exotic Spanish dishes. The area is known for its good wines and fine beaches.
Valencia, the third largest city in Spain, is famous for La Tomatina, an annual tomato fight, which draws huge crowds to the nearby town of Buñol in August. Paella valenciana, traditional Valencian ceramics and the intricate traditional dress of the city will leave a lasting impression with all visitors to the area.
Another excellent coastal drive is the Rias Altas, which takes drivers through one of Spain's lesser known areas. Known locally as 'Green Spain' because of its lush vegetation, the beautiful coastline boasts craggy headlands, traditional fishing villages and exotic shellfish. Stretch your legs on the beaches of Ribadeo where rocks form natural arches resembling a cathedral.
Take the Roman road from Cadiz to Cartagena for an extraordinary road trip. The ancient city of Cartagena is less visited than many other cities in southern Spain, which makes it a great place to escape the tourist crowd in season. Founded in the year 227BC, the city was made famous by Hannibal and his elephants after they landed here with the intention of defeating the Romans. In those days travel to the south required heading west, inland toward Lorca, skirting the mountain range, and then back to the coast at Almeria.
Since the mountain chains tend east-west, travel from Almeria along the coast is relatively easy. The route then would head toward Cadiz following the coast, avoiding the Rock of Gibraltar at the straits. Cadiz lies on the Atlantic side of The Rock. The ancients had built the route around The Rock long ago, and the Romans simply widened it.
Whichever route you choose for your trip, remember to drive safe and take your camera.
