This probably sounds easier said than done, but by following just a few pointers it’s possible to learn to change, touch up, replace and check many parts of your vehicle without the help of a trained mechanic (if you do need to go and see a mechanic make sure that he is accredited by your car insurance provider).
One job in particular is changing your car wiper blades. Every vehicle needs wiper blades which are able to keep your vision through the windscreen clean and clear in rain, snow and sleet. Because of their important function, it is recommended that owners change their wiper blades as often as once a year to guard against them wearing out or cracking and then not doing their job properly.
Changing your windscreen wiper blades takes no longer than 5 minutes, and requires no tools, so it’s not only fast, but also easy. In case you doubt the need for regular wiper blade changes, have a look at these quick facts: faulty wipers could get you a £1000 fine if you are pulled over and checked by the police and damaged or worn out wipers could lead to you failing your MOT. Enough incentive?
So get safe, and save, by following these easy steps to change your wiper blades:
Each car has its own type of wiper blades, so make sure you buy the right ones for your car. The owner’s manual will give you the correct information in this regard. All regular car stores will sell wiper blades, but make sure you buy good quality blades as they will come under some heavy fire in typical British weather.
Start off by making sure you have bought the correct wiper blades for your car, and not just the rubber inserts. Have a small screwdriver on hand in case you need it later.
Pull up the wiper arm so that you can work in the air and not on the windscreen surface. Remove the old blade from the wiper arm, by pushing on the small tab and pulling the wiper blade off, or lifting the tab with a small screwdriver if it is tricky or stiff.
As you insert the attachment onto the new blade or onto the wiper arm, listen for a click, as this will alert you that the attachment has slipped into place. Depending on your car make and model, it might be easier to put the attachment on the wiper blade first or to first put the attachment onto the wiper arm. Gently pull on the wiper blade to make sure it is securely attached and won't come off when in use at a later stage.
Replace the wiper arm onto the windshield and know you are prepared to face the best, and worst, British weather has to throw at you and your car.
