In an effort to manage your child’s diabetes, there are many things to consider, including introducing natural remedies for diabetes. While some are more popular than others, there are foods that have been proven to lower blood sugar levels and therefore are great additions to any diabetic diet.
For instance, both cucumbers and celery have been proven to lower blood sugar levels. Try offering your child these diabetes-friendly foods as healthy snacks and simultaneous natural remedies. Spread some sugar-free, all natural peanut butter onto celery sticks for an after school snack. Or try cucumber slices dipped in yogurt at lunch time. You have to learn to make food fun in unconventional ways.
While children are bombarded with unhealthy choices everywhere they look (from sugar-loaded cereal for breakfast, to sweet treats such as cookies, cakes, candies and ice cream) it is up to you as a responsible parent to not only offer them better options, but to do so in a way that makes them excited about the food they are eating. It’s certainly not an easy task, but as parents, it is a critical one. Especially when dealing with diabetes.
In addition to including natural remedies for diabetes in your child’s diet, consider also creating a meal plan for your child and your entire family. Create a list of foods to enjoy, foods to avoid and foods to eat only in moderation. For a diabetic diet, it is critical to avoid complex carbohydrates and natural sugars as much as possible. This includes typically healthy choices such as most fruits. Not only will a well-crafted meal plan help keep your child’s diet in check, but it will help your entire family keep close track of the foods they are ingesting.
It has also been proven that some herbs and spices help to lower blood sugar, and you may want to consider including them in your child’s diet as well. Ginseng, an herb, can be taken as a supplement, added to beverages, or to food. Be sure to check with your doctor to be sure this is
a natural remedy for diabetes that he or she recommends. Cinnamon has also been proven to have the same positive effect. Cinnamon is a bit easier to add to your child’s diet, as this natural remedy is a much more common flavor and one your child is likely to enjoy. Its great sprinkled on whole wheat toast, added to sugar-free desserts, or mixed in sugar-free drinks.
Of course, you always want to consult your child’s physician before making any major dietary changes; however, knowing that you can manage your child’s diabetes with some easily accessible natural remedies is a great start.
