If you have decided that this will be your career of choice, you will need to get started on achieving that goal. To achieve that goal, you will need to know how to be a nurse practitioner first. I have done a search for you and have come up with the following basic steps:

1. You will need to get at least a bachelor's degree to start your career. Fortunately for you, if you have completed college, that will take off a few years from your pursuit of a degree and you might be able to get one in a year.

2. Then, you will need to pass the NCLEX-RN exam. Basically this is the nursing licensure exam. As this is a national exam, you will need to pass it with flying colors before becoming a nurse.

3. More studying. You will need to have a master in nursing. Tip; apply for the course in the state that you would like to practice and search for programs or classes that is more oriented towards mental health care and psychiatry in particular.

4. Once you have finished the courses or programs, you will need to sit for the certification exam for psychiatry and mental health nurses. There are quite a few certifications with the largest being the American Nurses' Credentialing Center's.

5. Last but not least, you should apply for jobs in the area that you will be living in and in the type of environment that you would like to work. Once you have the job, you should always make sure that your license and certifications is continually updated by keeping up with the necessary education as required by your state.

With these simple steps, it will be easier for you to achieve your goal. The only thing you need to do is to follow them!
