When we are sick or affected by a certain condition it

is only natural for us to treat it with medications first

before we go to the doctor. And the same story goes

for people who are affected by the condition known as

Irritable Bowel Syndrome. But contrary to other

diseases, medications for irritable bowel syndrome is

not meant to treat the disease condition but only serve

as palliative care, which means that the medication

aims to treat the symptoms only. So basically, there is

still no known cure for the said condition. Even if that's

the case, it is still a relief that there are some ways for

you to combat the harmful effects of IBS to your body.

Some of the more common symptoms of this disease

would be severe pain, massive diarrhea, constipation,

nausea and vomiting. Medications are meant to target

these symptoms in order to promote comfort and

relaxation to the person. Here are some of the more

common medications that are used for people who

have IBS attacks.

Antispasmodics are quite popular to IBS patients

because it helps them get relief from pain and

abdominal cramps. Before, IBS was known as colonic

spasms so, from there, you can easily see the

connection of the medication to the condition.

Basically, the action of antispasmodics to IBS is that it

delays the action of the digestive system which, in

turn, reduces the opportunity for a spasm to occur.

Take note that you will need a doctor's prescription

before you take this kind of medication since some

people have reactions to this kind of medication.

Since one of the cardinal signs of IBS is diarrhea, you

would probably consider going out of the house with

anti diarrhea medications at hand. That way you do not

have to be caught with a diarrhea attack no matter what

you eat. One thing you need to remember though is

that you should not take these medications on a long

term basis because they may present a pathologic

problem someday. Also, before you even attempt to

chug down these types of medications on your own,

you always have to consult your physician for the right

doses to take.

Another common medication that is being prescribed

for people with IBS is antidepressant medications.

Generally these medications cannot relieve all of the

symptoms of IBS but they can be very helpful since

most IBS patients undergo depression.

If your main symptom of IBS is constipation rather than

diarrhea, you may also use laxatives to relieve yourself.

Again, consulting with your doctor is an absolute rule

so that you will not encounter any more harm. These

kinds of medications work by stimulating your digestive

system into contracting which thereby promotes

motility. This motility will rebound to the congested

stool and can help to move it.

These are the most common medications that you will

encounter when dealing with a person with IBS. These

may just be over the counter medications but they can

sure save a person when they're in a pinch.
