The symptoms of panic attacks are intense feelings of fear without the presence of actual dangers. The panic episode causes a continuous worry about having another attack. Panic attacks are common, occurring in at least 10% of US adults each year. Recurring panic attacks are the feature of panic disorder which is present in 2 to 3% of the population during any 12-month period. It usually begins in late adolescence or early adulthood.

A panic disorder is characterized by the sudden appearance of at least four of the following symptoms:

1. Chest pain or discomfort
2. Feeling of choking
3. Dizziness, unsteadiness, or faintness
4. Fear of dying
5. Fear of losing control or going crazy
6. Feelings of unreality, or detachment from oneself
7. Nausea, stomachache, or diarrhea distress
8. Numbness or tingling sensations
9. Palpitations or accelerated heart rate

Although panic attacks are uncomfortable, they are not dangerous.

If you have experienced episodes of depersonalization or de-realization, you're likely to wonder:
1. "Am I going crazy?"
2. "Do I have some grave illness?"
3. "Am I dying?"

The answers are no, no and absolutely not. In spite of quite disturbing, the symptoms are actually not thought to be dangerous.

Despite the causes of panic attacks are not clear, the tendency to have panic attacks runs in families, workplaces or schools. There also appears to be a connection with severe stress from major life events such as the death of a loved one, divorce, or job loss. Medical conditions and other physical causes can also trigger panic attacks.
Because panic disorder can coexist with other medical or psychological disorders, it is important that other conditions must be ruled out through examination and testing by a medical doctor before making a diagnosis. Ask your doctor if you are experiencing the symptoms of panic disorder. If a physical cause is not found, a referral to a qualified mental health professional should be made for further assessment and diagnosis.

Panic disorder is a treatable condition. They are generally treated with cognitive behavioral therapy or exposure therapy. These therapies can teach you how to prevent and cope with panic attacks. Medication can be used to control or reduce some of the symptoms and most effective when combined with other treatments.
