Boston is renowned for its importance in America’s creation, its educational institutions and its plethora of museums, galleries and libraries.

This attractive New England city is best visited during the autumn when its trees turn various shades of red and gold and the skies are clear and bright.

Boston is small and compact so it’s best explored on foot, and there are two walking routes that are themselves local attractions. Firstly, there is the ‘Freedom Trail’ that charters the city’s part in the revolution and the ‘Black Heritage Trail’ that follows Boston’s role in abolishing slavery.

These trails start from the oldest public park in America, the Boston Common Park. For the Freedom Trail, follow the red bricks dotted along the pavement and pass by key sites in America’s fight for independence from the British.

Massachusetts was the first state to abolish slavery and prominent anti-slavery campaigner and Boston resident, Robert Shaw is honoured with a memorial. You can see this as you follow the Black Heritage trail through Beacon Hill, one of the first communities of free blacks in America.

Boston has a highly-educated, young and outward looking population thanks to the 50 colleges and universities located in the greater Boston area. The most famous of course is Harvard University. Founded in 1636, this beautiful ivy-coloured building is worth visiting for its museums including the Harvard Art Museum and the Museum of Natural History.

The Boston Tea Party Ship and Museum offers an interesting and unique insight into Boston’s history. The ship may just be a replica of the original used when the patriots revolted against the British over increased taxes on tea, but it’s still a remarkably interesting attraction.

Although usually lumped together with Boston, Cambridge is a separate city. It is home to over 30,000 students who attend either Harvard or MIT. Harvard Square is a great place to have a coffee and spend an afternoon perusing bookshops.

Sport is also a big deal in this city thanks to its highly successful teams, including the Red Sox for baseball, the Celtics for basketball, the Bruins for hockey and the New England Patriots for American football. You should really try and watch at least one sporting event whilst you’re in town.
