Southern hospitality permeates Georgia’s welcoming capital. Gateway to the ‘New South’ and the birth place of the Civil Rights movement, Atlanta is an important city in America’s past as well as its future.
Its importance to black history in the US is evident everywhere. To get a better insight into this past you should visit the Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site. This includes his birth home, his church and memorial tomb where he is buried and the exhibits in these buildings give you an insight into the life of this Nobel-prize winning campaigner.
Atlanta also played a role in the revolution. The Atlanta History Centre, is home to the Tullie Smith House. One of the few homes that survived the ‘March to the Sea’ where General William Sherman destroyed most of Atlanta back in 1864, has been relocated here from outside the city limits. There are also several other historic buildings which give you an insight into slave culture as well as the cotton industry which once dominated the region.
For children, the Georgia Aquarium is a good bet. The largest aquarium in the US has over 100,000 animals in its huge tanks. You can explore the tropics and the arctic and even spend night to see what the animals do when humans go to sleep.
Atlanta’s music is varied but largely dominated by its black routes and laid back southern take on life. It has a very prominent jazz scene and every summer it hosts America’s largest free jazz festival at various locations throughout the city.
Shopaholics will be in paradise in Atlanta. Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza are where you will find two of the city’s biggest malls, home to Bloomingdale’s, Nieman Marcus, Macy’s, Jimmy Choo and Armani all fighting for your American dollars.
Buckhead, Virginia-Highland and Little Five Points are where you’ll find the smaller, trendier boutiques. You can sort through vintage and second-hand gear here as well as clothes from local Atlanta designers.
Southern American’s are in love with their food. It largely consists of meat and chicken and comes fried or barbequed. Even in the more up-market restaurants, barbecued ribs and battered and fried chicken are usually on the menu. For good-tasting, honestly-priced southern fare head to Mary Mac’s on Ponce de Leon Avenue and for simply outstanding, mighty large steak you must visit Bone’s – now an Atlanta institution.
