If you were to look up San Francisco in the dictionary you would find the definition: cool, cultured and chic without showing it off. Unlike Los Angeles, San Francisco likes to keep things understated.
It has beautiful architecture, fantastic food and wine and a vibrant cultural scene all on just 49 square miles of California coastline.
The weather in San Francisco is a bit hit and miss. A great fog descends on the area in summertime and the winters are rather wet and cold, so spring and autumn are the best times to visit. But this city has so much to offer both indoors and outside that you will always find something to do, no matter what the weather.
San Francisco, as you may already know, is rather hilly, in fact there are more than 50 hills within the city limits. So, unless you are ultra fit, it is worth getting a tram around town. These are locally known as cable cars and have now been designated a National Historic Landmark.
The hills and roads themselves have become landmarks now. Lombard Street is a pretty, winding one-way street that is used to travel down Russian Hill and has been used in several Hollywood movies.
San Francisco oozes style and the architecture is no exception. The best place to admire the beautiful 19th century housing is around Russian Hill and the Mission District which has now been lovingly gentrified whilst still retaining its Bohemian roots.
Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 have a great selection on shops, restaurants and entertainment such as Ripley’s Believe It Or Not and the National Maritime Museum and you can spend a whole day here wandering along the waterfront. The sea lions on Pier 39 have also become famous for their ruckus behavior, but be warned, they are rather smelly.
For more shopping, as well as top, up-market hotels, and some of the best off-Broadway theatres in the USA, spend some time in Union Square. This is the central hub of the city and where you can watch San Fran locals going about their daily business.
The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it was completed in 1937 and it is now one the most famous landmarks in the US and is synonymous with the San Francisco sky line. It is now the most photographed bridge but you can also get some great pictures of the city by walking across this rust-coloured structure.
Alcatraz, the inescapable prison that held the likes of Al Capone and Robert Stroud forms a key part in San Francisco’s money-grabbing and sometimes shady history. You can now take a self-guided audio tour around ‘The Rock’ and this makes for an interesting break away from the city streets.
